Episode 4
The One With the Open Plan Shed
Anna and Griff are in Aylesbury and are immediately called in to assist Conrad and Mark who are involved in a drugs search of a couple of likely lads. All goes smoothly, including the discovery of some cannabis on the suspect, but things then go a bit wonky when he is asked to remove his shoes – which he won’t do because he’s ‘got rights’ – which apparently state they can’t take his shoes off in a public place. No probs – they’ll just do it in the station instead. Unlike his mate, who is more co-operative, despite accusing Conrad of tickling him.
Waller and Flipper are in Reading and get called to an incident which is claimed to involve a knife. Paramedics waiting, they go in first to assess the situation as the ARV aren’t on scene yet. Being under strict instructions not to get too close, they attempt to check the likely suspect from the car, and thus ensues a dance between suspect and vehicle which must look astonishingly odd on CCTV. They can’t tell whether the guy has a knife or not – despite his constantly putting his hands in and out of his pockets – and behaving generally like he has. Eventually, he obeys Flipper’s commands to get on the floor – particularly once the ARVs finally arrive, and is cuffed under the surveillance of a guy with a taser. It turns out he doesn’t have a knife – though he has been cutting himself – which the paramedics are able to treat.
It’s ANPR time again, and Lloydy and Jim are behind a car with an illegally customised plate – which the driver’s already been warned about before. Apparently the previous driver was the man’s wife – so he claims that he knew nothing about it and is, thus, unaware that his car can be seized; though Lloydy is prepared to give him a ticket this time. It all turns out to be moot, though, as the driver was disqualified from driving only the previous week though a full house of penalty points, so he’s no more legal than his plates. Incredibly, despite having the same name, and living at the same address, the driver tries to make out that his license is clean – but since he’s now uninsured, they do seize his car.
Anna and Griff are back on patrol in Aylesbury, and an ANPR ding comes up almost the very moment they’re out of the nick. The van clunks to a halt, but – oddly – the passenger door opens and shuts. The reason for this soon becomes clear as the van reeks of cannabis, and – surprise, surprise, there’s a tidy stash that has turned up on the road underneath it. Worth a try, I suppose. Sadly, it’s the driver’s stash – and there’ll be no street caution this time – as he’s already got a conviction, so he’s going in leaving his non-driving passenger stranded. Though, as the driver has also done the ‘take the insurance out but cancel it once the certificate has arrived’ trick, that wouldn’t matter anyway, as it’s bye-bye, van.
We now join another Dog-handler, Jamie Gilson, who is also an ex-proactive, out and about in Slough. Like his former colleagues, he’s used to seeing the manky vehicles, though the astonishingly wrecked banger he comes across has to be the worst ever seen on Road Wars. The ultimate in open plan shed design, it’s beyond saving so Jamie condemns it. The driver is American, and he has been challenged to build a car from wreckage, which will be auctioned off for charity at a show the following day – but he has, foolishly, attempted to test drive on a public road. He and his ‘roadies’ are eager to retain it, so they’re going to have to find a trailer. Jamie is, however, merciful to the driver – and there are no charges, possibly because he’s laughing too much to make the arrest.
