Episode 9
The One With The Etheridge Patented Gate Opening Service
It’s lunchtime in High Wycombe, and Simon and Conrad’s break is interrupted by the appearance of a wanted car which pootles past them. They attempt to remain anonymous in the queue of traffic, but this proves impossible when the car pops into a petrol station, and they have to follow, scaring the driver away. Griff and Anna are ready at a roundabout to pull in front of it – but the driver backs into Simon and Conrad before zipping away at speed and triggering a pursuit before dumping the car and fleeing. This is not a problem for the dog patrol, and the occupants – who turn out to be suspected thieves – are soon collared.
Simon and Conrad are back in Slough, working as part of Operation Caveat, looking to catch burglars. A car spikes their ANPR as having no insurance so they head off after it, as it comes back as having been used for a burglary, so they get behind it as it pulls into a drive. The occupants are Romanian, which makes questioning them a challenging affair, and have an interesting heap of bling in the footwell of their car. With Charlie and Mish assisting them, the arrests begin and the car is searched. It’s got heaps of stuff which looks very likely to have been shoplifted. The female occupants of the house claim they don’t know the men who have just parked on their drive, despite also being Romanian. A house search begins, as one of the girls has apparently hurled something out into the garden – the door to which is locked. The only other way in is through a rickety wooden gate, which Charlie boots to smithereens like he’s just walked out of a Terminator movie. The search reveals a golf ball, and a pink purse full of rather ornate jewellery, which – it turns out – had only been stolen an hour previously!
Still with Simon and Conrad, still on Operation Caveat – but now in Chalvey, have their crim radars twitched by two pedestrians who cross the road in front of their car. They give the impression of being users of illicit substances, so the Chaps decide to carry out a stop search. The guys are users and submit to the search without demur, and are quite surprised at the Holmes-like manner in which they were spotted. One of them assumes matters are concluded and has to be brought back to the scene – but it turns out that he has failed to comply with the requirements of a drugs assessment order and has a warrant against him, which might explain his interest in heading off. And as for the outstanding burglary charge…
It’s clearly the Simon and Conrad show today, as they’re still in Slough; on the lookout for wanted suspects. This requires a detour to Maidenhead, and they head off to an area they reckon they’re likely to spot it – which they do! The driver doesn’t seem to have spotted them and heads to the pub, so they’re able to get behind him and make the arrest without too much difficulty.
Helen is out in Bracknell, extolling Bonnie’s virtues to the camera when they’re called to a flat where a major fight has been taking place. They arrive at a hallway which looks like a horror movie set, and find the victim within who claims that he’s alright, despite being covered in blood. The woman in the flat, over whom the men were fighting, gives the relevant details and explains that the damage was mostly done with a maglite-type torch. Given the violence involved, the visit to the suspect is made in goodly numbers, and he accepts his arrest with equanimity, and his ramblingly admits his involvement; though he claims to have ditched his torch near his Mum’s grave. Despite being a search expert, Bonnie is unable to track down this item. Mainly because it’s actually in a kitchen cupboard back at the bloke’s flat.
Conrad is in Slough with Charlie, behind a car whose passengers are giving out vibes. The car has a French registration, but the occupants are Romanian – and the car has been flagged in Hertfordshire as being involved in a crime; things get even more suspicious when the family claim to have been food shopping for their kids in Slough – despite living in Birmingham. Things remain friendly, however, with Charlie even being invited to go and visit! With Mark and Huey on hand to assist, the friendliness has to be put aside as a search starts. While there is a sat nav whose home address is not in Birmingham, the primary concern is the serious overloading of the car – which has six people in it. As they won’t let the car progress with such a load, someone has to get out – and the driver strikes a blow for equality by making his Wife get out and walk.
