Episode 20

The One With the Damaged Digit

Waller and Kev are in Slough – heading to intercept a nicked car. Apparently the car is now parked up while the driver does some shopping, so they head off to find it and wait for his return. There’s also an ARV at the other end of the road who can deploy a stop stick if necessary. It isn’t – as they manage to shock and awe the occupants enough to prevent them driving off. The stop has resulted in a few injuries, the driver getting a grazed face, and Kev a busted finger. Waller, however, is ready to run down anyone who flees – being able to run like a gazelle. He says. Seeking the advice of a paramedic, it turns out that Kev has actually managed to damage a tendon in his finger – necessitating two whole weeks off work to recover!

Conrad, now partnered with Anna, are in Aylesbury with Lloydy and Millsy on a drugs operation to intercept dealing. Unfortunately, the suspect they’re after spots the undercover officers trailing him and flees, so the Proactives have to pile in. The lad’s been nabbed, so Conrad and Anna take over to arrest him, while Lloydy searches him. Everyone’s positive that the lad has purchased drugs, but initial searches reveal nothing, requiring a more ‘intimate’ search down at the nick. While this is being done, Conrad and Anna commence a search of the area in case he’s discarded it into nearby undergrowth. After finding nothing, they manage to get hold of a drugs dog have a good sniff – but instead it’s another officer who finds the suspected package, which has about £1,000 worth of drugs in it!

Conrad and Anna are in Slough where they spot a moped driver taking a swig from a can of Stella. As he drives off, they follow to have a quick chat about it. It seems that he just likes to have a can at lunchtime. He needs, however, to give a sample of breath now – which means they’ve got to hang around for twenty minutes to avoid an instant, and unfair, fail. This annoys the driver, who is supposed to be back at work, and he starts throwing around threats that he will make a formal complaint, and starts getting almost ridiculously melodramatic about it while they wait, so Conrad gives him a firm lecture as to why the wait is precisely in his own best interests to ensure that he’s not unfairly arrested – as he then passes the breath test. Things are not improved by the discovery that his provisional license has been revoked, and the DVLA want it back. It seems that the cheque he sent them to pay for it bounced – but he never received any of the letters they sent him to sort things out. Thus Conrad is asked to confiscate the license until the driver can get in touch and pay for it.

Lloydy’s new partner – Millsy – gets his formal introduction to viewers. The twosome are in Reading on the look out for a vamoosed car which is out and about. It’s been spotted, heading to where they currently are, and they’re soon behind it. They keep their distance and watch as the driver interacts with two others with whom he appears to be in convoy. Things can no longer be ignored as the bandit vehicle starts driving dangerously, so they give chase – but Millsy can’t call in for back up thanks to busy airwaves and they end up losing it after being hampered by slower traffic. Fortunately, it’s found later that night abandoned, so at least the owner will get it back.

We rejoin Lloydy and Millsy in Reading, patrolling the night after the vamoose chase, and they spot one of the cars that was in convoy with the bandit vehicle. It’s parked outside a house, so they knock on the door and speak to the owner. Apparently he’s only recently bought it, and the current tax disc is in the glove compartment because he’s forgotten to switch them over – and a visit to the car verifies this. He is asked to describe his activities the previous night – particularly at the time they were behind his car, and the duo advise him that his car has been spotted in suspicious circumstances, then arrested for conspiracy to commit burglary, a matter explained by Millsy’s first – and only – piece to camera.

Still in Reading, but this time with Dan and Daz, who, in response to information in their briefing pack for the day, plan to stake out a suspect car whose owner is well known as a user of cannabis. He works at a Royal Mail sorting office, and they are easily able to catch up with him as he leaves work. The suspect is a jovial sort, and clearly hasn’t smoked so much as a crumb of weed, but this is probably because he hasn’t actually got around to it yet as there are two well-stocked deal bags not-very-well-hidden in his car. He’s not had any previous, so he is given a street caution.

Waller is back with Flipper – still in Reading! – and they find a parked up car which positively reeks of weed. The occupants have clearly been indulging, and none of them have sufficient wit to do anything other than admit to their activities and hand over whatever they’ve got left. It’s search time – and all the lads actually in possession are thoroughly cooperative, even the one whose eagerness to help is countered by his inability to actually find his remnants. As the car is parked outside the driver’s house, there’s no need to ban them from driving it home – though Flipper does rather have problems describing the driver’s hairstyle for his records.

And we finish with a nice little montage celebrating the Tango Victors and their humour – topped by the ultimate outtake as Waller runs straight into the cameraman!
