Where did the idea for RW come from?
Bill and I had both worked on police programmes before (Police Stop, Police, Camera, Action and X-Cars) and realised no-one was currently doing a decent show so stopped being rivals and joined together. I’d been to see Thames Valley’s Proactive Unit over a year before - soon after it had been set up - and was really impressed.
Despite our enthusiasm we got turned down at least three times before Sky said yes.
Who writes the scripts?
I used to write all the scripts but that’s become too big a job as the number of episodes has increased. We now have three producers for each series and they write their own scripts – well mainly!
What’s your favourite pun?
Some of the programmes still make me laugh out loud when I catch them on the TV but as for a favourite I’m struggling. It’s just stuff that makes us laugh at the time; sometimes we state the obvious at others we highlight the ridiculous.
What’s your favourite sequence?
I have a definite soft spot for the early shows – mainly because I shot most of them. So it’s Pat and Carl, Andy Partington and the rest of the team hard stopping a Celica in Reading and managing to smash every window. It’s in Show 2 Series I
When did you realise what an impact RW made and what is it about it that makes it a cult show?
I think it really started to grow once Sky started repeating the shows on Freeview. We’ve always had great fun putting the show together and treated all the material with respect. We easily get bored so we try to make them interesting for ourselves however many times we see them and often put stuff in that’s not blindingly obvious.
